Various small changes in territorial control have happened in Syria over the past month, with the so-called “Islamic State” still on the march against both government and rebels, consolidating its cross-border “caliphate” after taking much of Iraq.
After its rapid takeover of much of Iraq, ISIS has changed its name to just “Islamic State” and declared its leader the emperor of all Muslims, even while militarily pushing ever closer to the capitals of both Iraq and the autonomous Kurdistan region.
