The Assad government has gained more ground against rebels in the northwest, while the latest Russia-Turkey deal has replaced the now-obsolete “buffer zone” with a new “security corridor” along the frontlines.
Forces loyal to the Assad government have made major gains in and around rebel-held Idlib province, reestablishing government control along the entire Damascus-Aleppo highway for the first time in eight years.
In rebel-dominated Idlib province, Syrian army forces have pushed through the eastern side of Turkey and Russia’s mostly-defunct buffer zone, nearly reaching the rebel stronghold of Marat al-Numan.

Turkey and its rebel allies have connected two pieces of territory they hold in the northeast, while the Syrian military has deployed in a narrow strip along most of the rest of the border, creating buffer between Turkey and Kurdish YPG fighters.
