In December 2023, the RSF shocked Sudan by capturing the major eastern city of Wad Medani in Gezira state. Meanwhile, Darfuri former rebel groups rallied their forces amid divisions over whether to ally with the SAF.

From October to December of 2023, the RSF completed its control of all but one of Darfur’s state capitals, while also expanding slightly south of Khartoum. Former and current rebel groups were rallying to defend El Fasher, the last Darfur capital, from an RSF takeover.
