An unrelenting campaign by the Kurdish YPG militias in northern Syria finally succeeded at lifting the Islamic State siege of Kobani, while rebels have scored victories against the Assad government in the country’s west.
The so-called “Islamic State” is has consolidated control of Syria’s northeast despite US airstrikes, while rebels have expanded their control in the southwest and the Al Qaeda affiliated Nusra Front is edging out other rebel groups in the northwest.
Even as the US has begun airstrikes against the so-called “Islamic State” in Syria, the group has reached the gates of Kurdish-controlled Kobani/Ayn al-Arab, now a city under siege.
