The past month has seen major advances by pro-Assad forces against rebels in the country’s northwest, even as the so-called “Islamic State” makes modest gains in the same area.
The pro-Hadi coalition has made modest progress against both the Houthis and AQAP, though the Houthis remain firmly entrenched in their core area of control, having defeated a rebellion by their one-time ally the former President Saleh.
By our estimates, IS territory in Syria is now divided into seven separate pieces: four in the eastern desert near Iraq, where the campaign against the group is focused, and three scattered across the country’s west.
In the aftermath of Kurdistan’s defiant independence referendum, its forces have been pushed back to their pre-2014 territory by an Iraqi government offensive. Meanwhile, IS has lost the last two towns it controlled in the country.
