In early December 2025, Yemen’s southern separatist coalition swept across Hadramawt and Mahra provinces, upending years of stable control lines and nearly completing its dominance over the former South Yemen.
Al Shabaab swept back across central Somalia in early 2025, while ISIS retreated amid an offensive by Puntland state. Meanwhile, Jubaland state went rogue after a violent conflict with the federal government.
Half a year of gains against Al Shabaab collapsed at the end of August 2023, ushering in more than a year of stalemate, while ISIS consolidated power in the northern mountains.
In mid-2023 the coalition against Al Shabaab reached its peak of territorial control, while the SSC-Khatumo rebellion emerged victorious against Somaliland.
The self-declared Republic of Somaliland claims that 2023’s successful “SSC-Khatumo” rebellion had help from Al Shabaab. Most experts aren’t convinced, but that doesn’t mean the Al Qaeda affiliate is completely absent from the area.
