A demilitarized buffer zone has gone into partial effect along front lines between government and rebel forces in Syrian’s northwest, while in the southeast the so-called “Islamic State” has managed to reverse some of its recent losses near the Iraqi border.
Syria has mostly seen a break in rebel vs. government fighting, even while the so-called “Islamic State” continues losing ground to both the Assad government and the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces.

Pro-Assad forces have cleared both rebels and so-called “Islamic State” fighters from the borders of Jordan and the Golan Heights area, restoring full pro-government territorial control of Daraa, Quneitra, and Suwayda provinces.
Government forces have rapidly swept through rebel-held areas of Syria’s southwest – formerly known as De-escalation Zone 4 – reducing rebel control of Daraa province from nearly 50 percent down to zero.
As Kurdish and government forces nibble away at so-called “Islamic State” territory in the eastern desert, the group’s fighters have popped up in new areas of the country’s southwest.

The rebel-held “Zone 2” enclave around Rastan has been eliminated by the pro-Assad coalition, which also now controls all of Damascus and its suburbs for the first time since 2011, having captured the so-called “Islamic State” enclave in the city.

The Kurdish YPG has mostly withdrawn from its northwestern Afrin enclave amid a Turkish-led assault, while three rebel enclaves around Damascus have been completely wiped off the map by government offensives.
Pro-Assad offensives have divided the Eastern Ghouta rebel enclave near Damascus into three separate pieces, while the Turkish-led intervention has joined rebel-held areas to cut off Kurdish YPG access to Turkey’s border.
The Turkish military has begun a cross-border campaign against Kurdish militias in Syria’s northwest, while pro-Assad forces have eliminated an enclave of the so-called “Islamic State” south of Aleppo and advanced in rebel-controlled Idlib province.
